For over 30-years I’ve been a freelance writer working mainly in comics. Whilst writing for Fleetway Publications I was churning out weekly stories for half the characters in their Whizzer & Chips comic and half the characters in its sister comic, Buster. That is until Fleetway’s owner, Robert Maxwell, took a midnight swim. (As well as fiddling the books Maxwell was rather obese and there was a rumour that a whaling ship had spotted his body and harpooned it by mistake.) This was on top of the work I was doing for a number of DC Thomson’s comics like Warlord, Victor, Commando, Starblazer, Dandy & Beano Comic Libraries. A glutton for punishment I’ve also produced sketches and quickies for TV and radio and spent two years as a gag writer supplying jokes to a number of comedians, even when they begged me not to! Sod them! They had to like it or lump it. Not satisfied with this, I’ve dabbled in gonzo journalism, albeit without Hunter S. Thompson’s voracious appetite for illegal substances!
